Otomi Everywhere

After seeing Luella and June's post on "What She's Loving Now" featuring an imitation Otomi print on Thursday it reminded me of how many printed and copied Otomi interpretations I've been seeing around lately. It seems that every retailer has come up with their own version....

A few examples:
Red Envelope was selling these imitation Otomi stockings and tree skirts during Christmas:

Stocking still on sale here

Crate and Barrel is currently selling printed Otomi inspired placemats and napkins. Made in India...

Find them here and here

It's wonderful retailers are embracing designs and aestheics from indigenous crafts people but I wish that instead of creating their own interpretations of these designs and having them printed cheaply in India or China they would go straight to the source and employ the talented artisans they are taking inspiration from. This is a great book I own that gives a wealth of information about the Otomi people and their craft if you are interested in knowing more about the people that have inspired this design trend that's everywhere...
